The initial title of this post was, Phantom Father (inspired by an extraordinary poet). However, after writing this I realized it exceeded those two words. This isn't a poem, I am not a poet. I am just a girl with a knack for expressing her thoughts in words. To those with absent fathers I ask that you forgive them and realize that we are not our parents. Their mistakes are their mistakes; we all make them. Maybe they figured they made the right decision when they left. We will never know.
Two words that mean the same to me. Invisible.
Merriam-Webster said it best
Phantom: something apparent to sense but with no substantial existence
A mere thought. An optical illusion.
Escaped through the cracks of my boredom.
Your existence is my canvas, your soul is my paint
With every stroke I create you, every breath you will take
Monday a teacher, Sunday a preacher?
You're my fantasy, you Boogie-man creeper
Unfortunately, father I will never get to...
guess it didn't rhyme.
Father. Friend, Admire, Tender, Helper, Endear, Role-model
But you.... Foreign, Absent, Tapped-out, Horror, Excluded, Rejected
Same word. Two meanings.
One present. One absent.
How demeaning it must be Phantom Father,
to know your kids despise you for your present
The point is Phantom Father, you're ghost.
No pun intended. And after trying to
decipher why you weren't...aren't here.
I've concluded that your absence caused less havoc, than your unwavering presence
A true blessing in disguise
If you were here I might of had
an amazing childhood
If you were here I might of
stood a chance against the demons of
Reality is, you aren't and I'm eternally grateful.
The mountains I have climbed without you
have saved me
The places that I have walked, have molded me
My intentions aren't for you to be a shamed
but that you realize I have lived a life I
am proud to call my testimony
and your lack of presence permitted it.
God knew you wouldn't be here to dot every T
and cross every I.
Why is it this way? I'm not sure.
What I do know is that I may never utter these
words to you in this lifetime.Phantom Father I forgive you and I hope wholeheartedly
one day you can forgive yourself.
